English grammar refers to the language rules that govern English. English grammar specifies how meanings are created in English. There are two groups of grammar, which are the descriptive and prescriptive groups. Descriptive grammar sees language as used in a regional area, or how it is used in speech and writing within a certain context. Prescriptive grammar sees meanings based on the standard rules of a certain language.
English, in its most basic form, is a subject-verb-object language. Sentences are usually in their declarative form. For example, the sentence "John likes food," is a simple subject-verb-object sentence, with “John” as the subject, “likes” as the verb, and “food” as the object.
Aside from this, word order can be considered a complicated matter in English. The organization of the message is affected by the speaker or writer's point of view, and the parts of the message can be ordered in many different ways, depending on what message the speaker or writer wants to convey. Apart from the subject-verb-object elements, there are usually many other parts of the sentence that are normally used during construction. There can be as many as seven parts to a sentence, or as few as one.
There are several important parts to any language, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and many more. The most common element that most children learn first is the noun, however, as these are used to represent and name tangible objects in the surroundings.
Nouns in English are words that, in general, are used to refer to persons, places, abstract ideas and things. Nouns in English are usually not marked according to gender, but for number and definiteness instead.
Grammatical gender, however, is preserved in third-person pronouns. Pronouns are used as substitutes to nouns. For example, the pronoun “it” is used to as a substitute for an object; for instance, “she” is used to refer to a female noun like “Mary.” Gender is usually assigned to living objects that have biological genders or personified objects, depending on how they are classified by the society.
